1 in 14 children have a hidden but common disability known as Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).
“Many children with Developmental Language Disorder and their families suffer in silence due to poor awareness of this hidden disability” Jan Morey, The Glenleighden School Principal.
“For a number of our students, refusal from mainstream schools has left them with limited options to access an education. Our Open Day is being held to raise awareness of the disability and the services available to families affected which includes The Glenleighden School.”
Andrew, Father of Maddie 9 years old: “Maddie is in many ways a typical nine-year-old kid. She loves singing and dancing, riding her bike, playing in the park, camping and drawing. But she has always had one fundamental drawback. She struggled with her speaking and understanding what others said.
Thankfully, through a family friend, we were introduced to The Glenleighden School operated by Speech & Language Development Australia in Brisbane, and after some significant packing and a lot of jet lag as we were living in the UK, Maddie started school in the wonderful grounds of Fig Tree Pocket, Australia.
Maddie is again in a safe environment with lots of friends and an educational plan tailored to her specific needs. As a result Maddie is far more advanced in her communication skills than she would otherwise be, and continues to be a happy and engaged child who loves school. Maddie is a great example of what can be achieved if the right support is provided from day one.
Unfortunately for most DLD children, the level of support needed from multiple therapists and qualified teachers is simply unavailable in mainstream education.”
