12 months of a new Premier, same old crime problem gripping Victoria

Liberal Party Victoria

On the eve of the 12-month anniversary of Jacinta Allan’s appointment as Premier, new data shows that Victorians face an escalating crime crisis under an old and tired Labor Government.

, for the 12 months to 30 June 2024, reveals the overall number of offences increased by 9.1 per cent to 552,228. During this time, there were 6,445 residential aggravated burglaries – an 18 per cent increase on the previous 12 months. During this 12-month period, motor vehicle theft increased by 24 per cent to 23,248 – that is one vehicle stolen every 23 minutes in Victoria.

Retail theft increased by 32 per cent, and there was a 17 per cent increase of theft from motor vehicles.

The Allan Labor Government’s continual denial of a youth crime crisis is typical Labor spin to deny a problem created by them. The data highlights crimes committed by young offenders is up 20 per cent in the last 12 months and 28.9 per cent under Labor.

All of this comes as Premier Allan cuts 46 per cent from community crime prevention budget and closed the crime prevention unit at the Department of Justice and Community Safety.

Shadow Minister for Police, Brad Battin said: “Under a new Premier, Victoria has the same crime problem under the same old, tired Labor Government.

“Instead of continually denying the crime problem in Victoria, Premier Allan Labor should be doing more to protect Victorians, who are worse off because of it.

“These crimes are occurring because there are fewer police on the street. The Allan Labor Government is doing nothing to solve the frontline policing crisis and instead are at war with hard working Victoria Police officers.

“The Allan Labor Government has run out of ideas and willingness to solve crime problems in Victoria, and we will continue to be less safe while they are in Government.

“Labor can’t manage community safety and Victorians are paying the price.”
