Northern Territory Fire and Emergency Services is pleased to announce the graduation of Recruit Squad 50, a dedicated group of 12 new Firefighters who are now ready to serve the Territory.

The graduation ceremony will take place at Darwin Fire Station this evening, and will be live-streamed on the Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) Facebook page from 5.00pm ACST.

Having completed an intensive 19-week training course, the graduates will now formally commence their service with NTFRS and enhance emergency response capabilities across the Territory.

While the recruits come from various parts of Australia, they will now be based in the Northern Territory, ready to respond to a range of emergency situations.

Eight of the Firefighters from Squad 50 will be stationed in Alice Springs, while the remaining four will be based in Darwin, ensuring comprehensive coverage in urban areas.

The Recruit Firefighters completed a rigorous 19-week training program that included the following critical areas:

  • Road Crash Rescue
  • First Aid
  • Urban Search and Rescue
  • On and Off-Road Driving
  • Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT)
  • Wildfire Response
  • Pump Operations
  • Communications
  • Urban Fire Suppression

A practical demonstration of their newly acquired skills will take place as part of the graduation ceremony, highlighting their preparedness for real-world challenges.

Acting Chief Fire Officer Stephen Sewell AFSM congratulated Squad 50 on their dedication and hard work.

“Squad 50 has shown exceptional discipline throughout their training which has equipped them with the skills and knowledge necessary to protect the people of the Northern Territory. Today marks the beginning of their important service to the community, and we are proud to welcome them into the NTFRS.”

Looking ahead, Acting Chief Fire Officer Sewell provided encouraging words for the graduates.

“Firefighting is about more than fighting fires. It’s about building safe and resilient communities and making a difference through awareness and education on fire safety issues, hazard abatement, legislation compliance, road accidents, and other types of rescues and hazards faced by Territorians every day.

“I’m confident you will rise to meet every challenge with integrity and strength, always remembering our mission to protect people, property, and the environment.”

Recruitment for NTFRS Squad 51 will commence early in 2025.
