125thMAY DAY MARCH IN MELBOURNE SUNDAY 7thMAY 2019

The Melbourne May Day Committee is currently organising the 125thannual May Day events in Melbourne.

The May Day March will take place on Sunday 5th May, through the city streets of Melbourne.

The May Day events commemorate the struggles of working people to improve their pay and conditions over the decades, improvements that have benefitted the entire community.

May Day 2019 is also a time to re-state the determination of working people through their unions and local communities to fight any and all attempts by the big employers and conservative governments to destroy the gains made over the decades.

The protection of penalty rates, reduced hours of work, health and safety at work, workers’ rights to organise and join unions, workers’ rights to collective bargaining, workers’ wage levels, workers’ social conditions and many others are under attack in Australia today.

May Day is also about solidarity with and support for workers in all lands struggling for the same things as Australian workers.

May Day welcomes migrant workers, asylum seekers and refugees coming to Australia to seek a better life and recognises the enormous contribution they make and can make to the quality of Australia’s way of life.

We condemn the backward, inhumane and undemocratic treatment of these people from other lands, particularly asylum seekers.

At May Day 2019 we also condemn military aggression against any sovereign nation and we demand that the Australian Government supports the nuclear disarmament decision by the United Nations.
