Residents of the Pilbara region are set to benefit from the McGowan Government’s latest Budget, which will see an additional $13.8 million dedicated to specialist health services as part of the Pilbara Health Initiative over four years.
The program means there will be medical specialists at Karratha Health Campus, including access to:
- Emergency medicine specialists;
- Consultant surgeon;
- Consultant paediatrician;
- Specialist obstetrician; and
- Community midwife.
Under the program, pregnant women in the inland Pilbara area will be able to access enhanced and culturally appropriate midwifery care. The funding also allows for outreach services in Roebourne, Onslow, Tom Price and Paraburdoo.
Tom Price and Newman Health Services are also set to receive a boost with the implementation of a new women’s health program.
As stated by Health Minister Roger Cook:
“Providing access to quality health care services is essential to maintaining strong regional communities and this $13.8 million funding commitment from the McGowan Government ensures residents of the Pilbara will continue to have access to a range of specialist services.
“Providing access to medical specialists close to home means patients are spared the stress of travelling to Perth and leaving family and community support. This major investment in Pilbara health care demonstrates how the McGowan Government is putting patients first.”
As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:
“As well as maintaining the current program of medical specialist and obstetric service
programs at Karratha Health Campus, we will have outreach services in Roebourne, Onslow, Tom Price and Paraburdoo.
“This funding will also provide pregnant women in the inland Pilbara area with access to enhanced midwifery services and builds upon this Government’s commitment to providing culturally appropriate care.”
