The new $14 million Jindabyne Police Station in the Monaro region was officially opened this morning (Wednesday 14 February), bolstering the capabilities of NSW Police on the snowfields and surrounding communities.
Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism, Yasmin Catley joined NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb APM and Monaro Commander Superintendent John Klepczarek, to officially unveil the new purpose-built facility.
Construction began in February 2022, and consists of four buildings: a police station, police accommodation, boat shelter, and garage for police vehicles and snowmobiles.
Minister for Police and Counter Terrorism Yasmin Catley said the new station is a major boost to frontline policing and community safety across the Jindabyne region.
“I’m 100% committed to rebuilding and supporting the NSW Police Force. This includes ensuring they have the resources and modern facilities they need, to do their jobs safely and effectively,” said Minister Catley.
“This Government is getting more boots on the ground across NSW. We’re paying recruits to study and already we’ve seen a surge in applications to join the NSW Police.”
NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb APM said the opening of the new Jindabyne police station is a significant day for the local community.
“This new station will ensure NSW Police can continue to serve residents and visitors to Jindabyne and surrounding towns to drive down crime and keep the community safe,” Commissioner Webb said.
“The new purpose-built station provides state of the art facilities and new technology, enhancing police responses, particularly during the peak seasons.”
“As part of the redevelopment, there are new modern accommodation facilities for additional officers and specialist units which bolster police numbers during the tourism months of winter and summer.”
Monaro Police District Commander, Superintendent John Klepczarek, said the facility will enable officers to meet the policing needs of the local community and its visitors more effectively.
“We have more than 1 million tourists visit the snowfields over the snow season and with the popularity of Thredbo as a mountain biking destination throughout the year, this fit-for-purpose facility will help bolster our response capabilities, during all seasons,” Commander Klepczarek said.
“The Jindabyne Station is an important base for search and rescue operations and will enable our officers to better respond not just to the snowfields, but better service the needs of the broader community, no matter the season.”
The new station will accommodate approximately 20 staff and includes:
– Public front counter and interview rooms
– General duty rooms
– Modern charge room and custody area
– Meeting/conference rooms
– Storage area for exhibits/investigation storage
– Meal room, lockers, and amenities
– Vehicle parking for operational vehicles
– Secure storage for snow vehicles and equipment
– Police staff accommodation to include 10 rooms with ensuites, in a separate building
