Recently, Council received a briefing from MDHS regarding the design and planning for the new hospital, possibly the largest project ever undertaken in Central Goldfields Shire.

Part of the discussion related specifically to parking. Everyone agrees that this is a major issue and is being addressed. But I want to focus on the ‘big picture’. The centrepiece of the new development will be situated on the corner of Clarendon and Neill Streets. This multi-storey, ultra-modern , purpose designed building will blend harmoniously with the historic buildings that surround it.

I was impressed to hear the project architects say that the new building is designed to complement the Civic Square. It will be built in a direct line with the Town Hall, ensuring that the street rhythm is maintained. There will be considerable use made of sandstone, a feature of many of Maryborough’s historic buildings.

I am personally excited that the existing front entrance to the hospital, a 1960’s monstrosity will go. This will again expose what remains of the hospital’s original central and north wings. When opened the area will be beautifully landscaped. What I learnt from this briefing is that although $100 million is being spent, visitations to the hospital will not increase dramatically.

Where the money will be spent is bringing the facilities and equipment up to the latest ‘state of art’ standards. The hospital redevelopment is incredibly exciting.

The upgrade of facilities and equipment will be of benefit to our community for decades to come and should be welcomed by everyone.
