16 Days Of Activism: Bayside

Bayside Council once again supported the international 16 Days of Activism campaign against Gender-Based Violence that ran from 25 November 2024 to 10 December 2024.

Council participates in the event each year to increase awareness and understanding of the impact domestic & family violence has on our community.

It’s currently reported that one in six women in Australia have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by a current or former partner, a statistic that Bayside Council has committed to improving.

Bayside’s campaign started with the annual Say No to Domestic Violence Community Walk from the Ramsgate Life Saving Club to Depena Reserve on Saturday 23 November.

Councillors, Federal and State MPs, residents, community groups, schools, sporting teams and members of the St George Police Area Command joined the 1.5km foreshore march from Ramsgate Life Saving Club to Depena Reserve.

The walk ended with a community sausage sizzle and the opportunity to hear from several advocates sharing their stories and expertise.

Council flags were also flown across the LGA in support of the 16 Days of Activism campaign against Gender Based Violence.

Council hosted a training workshop to help frontline workers get a better understanding of the impact domestic and family violence has on children.

The Arncliffe Youth Centre hosted a self-defence seminar for woman and young girls.

Council works with key partners including NSW Police, Bay City Care, Bayside Women’s Shelter, Advance Diversity Services, Sydney Multicultural Services, South Eastern Community Connect and other local groups and services to help reduce and prevent cases of family and domestic violence in our local community.

1800RESPECT is available for free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support people impacted by domestic, family or sexual violence.

Mayor Edward McDougall said

“I am proud that Council and the community continues to stand up against violence as we all work to create a safer community for everyone,” Mayor Edward McDougall said.

“I would like to thank everyone for joining our Say No to Domestic Violence Community Walk and the community groups for all the work they do to helping those who experience domestic violence.”
