16 Days Of Activism Campaign: Bayside

Bayside Council is once again supporting the international 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign, that runs every year from 25th November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign is an opportunity to revitalize commitments to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls.

This year the campaign is running under the theme: Every 10 Minutes, a woman is killed. #NoExcuse. UNiTE to End Violence against Women.

Managed by UN Women, the campaign calls on governments, civil society, women’s organizations, young people, the private sector, and the media to address the global pandemic of violence against women and girls.

The colour orange was chosen to help draw attention to this global initiative to end violence against women in all its forms

Since 1991, more than 6,000 organizations from approximately 187 countries have participated in the campaign.

It’s currently reported that 1 in 6 women in Australia have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by a current or former partner, a statistic that Bayside Council has committed to improving.

Council supports the campaign each year to increase awareness and understanding of the impact domestic & family violence has on our community.

Council’s annual community Walk Against Family and Domestic Violence attracted a large crowd on Saturday 23 November.

Council is also flying orange street flags in support of the 16 Days of Activism campaign.

1800RESPECT is available for free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support people impacted by domestic, family or sexual violence

Mayor Edward McDougall said

“I would like to thank all the families, friends, community groups and Police who turned up to support our annual walk, together with our State and Federal members who joined in to send a clear message against family and domestic violence,” Mayor Edward McDougall said.
