Hume City Council is getting set to embark on a series of events that will bring community members together for 16 Days of Activism to end violence against women, beginning Monday 25 November.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence is an international campaign that highlights violence against women as a critical human rights issue.

In April of this year, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declared that Australia was facing a national crisis of violence against women with one woman being killed every four days.

The 16 Days of Activism campaign uses the period between International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25 November, and Human Rights Day on 10 December, to demand action.

Beginning Monday, Hume locals will have the opportunity to be in the conversation about how we can all encourage change and create a community committed to safety, equality, and respect for all.

A number of interactive and informative will be hosted by Council, in partnership with local organisations, to reach across our community:

  • Art Workshop by Arabic Welfare – Painting the Mural of Resistance

  • Mickleham North Walk Against Family Violence

  • Health and Wellbeing Workshops for Men and Women (English and Punjabi)

Plus, join us for a free community event featuring an expert panel discussion and Q&A exploring the theme of “Respect Is Strength: Stand Up, Speak Out”, being held at Town Hall on Tuesday 26 November.

As well as the expert panel, the event will feature a performance from a local women’s choir, afternoon tea and information stalls from our local family violence services.

Make sure to learn more and register your interest for all of our 16 Days events at our website.

The prevention of violence against women is work we are committed to all year round.
