$16M upgrade to boost Gippsland services

Maryvale Private Hospital has begun a major upgrade to double its surgical output and help attract specialists to the Gippsland region at a time when waiting lists are growing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The $15.93 million redevelopment, which will provide two new operating theatres, a day surgery unit, sterilising department and 19 additional beds.

The project, to be delivered by Australian-owned INTREC Management, will create 110 jobs for construction, clinical and non-clinical workers.

“The redevelopment of Maryvale Private Hospital provides modern surgical facilities and amenities that mean private hospital patients are more likely to receive the care they need close to home, reducing the burden of travel,” Latrobe Health Services CEO Ian Whitehead said.

“It also makes working from Gippsland a more attractive option for specialist surgeons and physicians, improving access to health services within the region.”

The upgrade, which started in January 2022, will also include a post-acute care recovery unit, new admission and waiting areas, expanded consulting suites, and staff, patient and visitor amenities.

Maryvale Hospital Board Chair Therese Tierney said the creation of purpose-built surgery facilities would mean smooth and streamlined patient admission and reduced waiting times.

“Each year, about 38,000 Gippslanders are admitted for treatment in private hospitals. This development will mean more options and less need to travel for those within the region wanting to access specialist healthcare,” she said.

Hospital CEO Lee Garwood praised the investment in the 46-bed, Morwell-based facility, which has served the rural region in south-east Victoria since opening in 1991.

“We understand that accessing elective surgeries now is challenging. Maryvale Private Hospital is committed to helping Gippslanders access the services they need as soon as possible – and expanding our services for the growing needs of our community,” he said.
