$2 million funding boost for Ormeau Park ‘n’ Ride

The Palaszczuk Government has announced it will double its funding to help deliver more than 110 additional car parks for Ormeau station commuters.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the $2 million funding boost would bring the total investment package for the Ormeau Park ‘n’ Ride upgrade to $4 million and the total number of car parks at the station to 390, once constructed.

“Initial design work on the upgrade indicated that only 70 new car parks could be built, but we have since been able to identify that, with further detailed design work, a total of 110 additional spaces can be built,” Mr Bailey said.

“Building more car parks will mean construction won’t start until later than initially planned however, the extra time and additional funding will ensure a larger Park ‘n’ Ride facility for Ormeau commuters.

The additional design work is expected to be complete in coming months, with tenders for construction soon after.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to delivering transport infrastructure to support growth on the Gold Coast and the record 182 million public transport trips taken across the south east last year.

Patronage at Ormeau station jumped 21 per cent when comparing trips at the station from October to December 2018 and the same period the previous year – top six among south east train stations.

“Together with Gold Coast Light Rail Stage Two and the Coomera to Helensvale rail duplication, the Palaszczuk Government is delivering when it comes to public transport for Gold Coasters. It brings our total investment to deliver more than 2,300 new car parks for commuters across the south east to $116 million.

“Once complete, the Ormeau Park ‘n’ Ride upgrade will help to connect even more Ormeau residents with public transport in their region.”
