The Rockliff Liberal Government is doing what matters for all Tasmanians by building a safer and more efficient road network right around the State.
The $20 million Cam River Bridge near Somerset in Tasmania’s North West will open to all traffic next week, being delivered on time and on budget.
Infrastructure and Transport Minister Michael Ferguson said eastbound traffic heading to Burnie would be switched onto the new bridge from 6:00 am on Monday.
“The final traffic switch will make the new bridge fully operational, providing a host of benefits to people travelling across the north of the State,” Mr Ferguson said.
“First and foremost, the higher and more robust structure will be better able to withstand extreme weather events such as the 2022 flood, which are predicted to become more common in the future.
“Its extra width means there is increased capacity to keep traffic moving in the event of a crash or breakdown.
“With all traffic using the new bridge, demolition will start on the old bridge and work will start on landscaping the surrounding area. The whole project is expected to finish in April 2024, as scheduled.”
The new bridge previously opened to westbound traffic on 25 January.
Mr Ferguson said the upgraded Murchison Highway intersection would also open on Monday.
The traffic signals are undergoing further work and testing before their expected operation in April.
