The Australian Trucking Association has today announced the finalists for the 2019 ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Trucking Industry Awards.
The ATA represents the 50,000 businesses and 211,500 people in the Australian trucking industry and each year recognises industry excellence through its award program.
“These prestigious awards recognise the businesses and individuals who go above and beyond to contribute to the industry and improve their workplace,” ATA Chair Geoff Crouch said today.
“Each finalist in our award categories has demonstrated exceptional dedication to Australian trucking through their commitment and hard work,” he said.
This year the award judging panel, led by former ATA Chair Trevor Martyn, received an unprecedented number of nominations across the award categories.
“The number of nominations we received shows the high standard of professionalism and passion of industry members,” Mr Crouch said.

Leigh Smart, Formula Chemicals
Leigh Smart is director of Formula Chemicals, well-known for his positive approach and enthusiasm. Leigh founded the company in 1973 and was the only employee. Now the business has expanded across four factories and employs more than 40 staff.
Dedicated to safety, Leigh is a mentor in the WorkCover ‘Safe Business is Good Business’ program and was an accredited WorkCover consultant for 15 years.
Leigh is a generous contributor to the trucking industry, involved in the ATA Truckweek events in 2014 and 2016. Leigh has been a passionate industry representative and advocate for many years, particularly in the road transport of dangerous goods.
Ray Taylor, Taylor’s Removals and Storage
Ray Taylor is chairman of Taylor’s Removals and Storage and has been in the road transport business for more than 50 years. Ray started working in the family business in the 1960s and was appointed as a director in 1973.
Ray has made significant contributions to the trucking industry, serving as a QRTA Board Member for 17 years before playing an instrumental role in the transition of the QRTA to the Queensland Trucking Association. Ray was president of the QTA from 1996-1998 and is still a current member. Ray is also a life member of the Australian Furniture Removers Association.
Ray’s commitment to the industry has benefited many who were and still are operating in the industry.
David Smith, D & S Smith Haulage
David is managing director of D&S Smith Haulage and has worked in the transport industry for more than 40 years as a driver, business owner and industry leader through his involvement in associations and committees.
David is President of the Livestock and Rural Transporters Association of South Australia, a vice-chair of the Australian Trucking Association, and former President of the Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association. David is passionate about encouraging young people in the transport industry and strives to ensure the sustainability of the industry long term.
Chief Inspector Phillip Brooks, NSW Police Force – Traffic & Highway Patrol Command
Chief Inspector Phillip Brooks is Stakeholder Manager of the NSW Police Force Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, a position he has held for nine years. In his 32 years of policing, Chief Inspector Brooks has held a range of roles including general duty, investigations and more recently, road safety engagement.
Chief Inspector Brooks has had a long involvement in road freight transport, maintaining a constant focus on heavy vehicle safety and compliance and has been actively involved in the ATA’s Coffee with a Cop events, engaging drivers and trucking operators in positive discussion.
Chief Inspector Brooks is well-known for conducting presentations to stakeholder groups, commercial entities and smaller operators to broadcast the safety and compliance message throughout the transport industry.

William Dalgleish, Cleary Bros
William Dalgleish is a professional truck driver at Cleary Bros NSW, working with the company for the past seven years. Well-known to internal and external stakeholders as a trusted and dependable adviser, William’s career in the trucking industry spans more than 30 years.
William demonstrates immense pride in his personal appearance and vehicles under his management, with an impeccable eye for detail.
William is focused on the training of young staff and over the last two years has taken 12 inexperienced drivers under his wing, mentoring them to a high standard of excellence. William is also an active advocate for improving industry image, volunteering in numerous ‘Camp Quality Convoy’ events.
Bernard Forssman, AFD / Directhaul
Bernard has driven for AFD/Directhaul for 25 years and been a part of the industry for more than 45 years. Bernard carts aviation fuel along the Stuart Highway and has driven more than 10 million kilometres incident-free.
Bernard is a quiet achiever who takes great pride in his work, strives to keep his equipment in pristine condition, and is respected by his peers for his professionalism and reliability.
Russell Lee, AFD / Bultrans / Directhaul
Russell Lee is a road train driver with Directhaul, serving the business for 31 years. Russell is a role model at the company and is described by his colleagues and management as a safe, dependable, professional, trustworthy and hardworking.
In his 31 years with Directhaul, Russell has driven an estimated 11 million kilometres and delivered more than 509 million litres of fuel, the whole time maintaining an immaculate driving record with zero major incidents.

Coralie Chapman, Linfox
Coralie Chapman is Transport Scheduler at Linfox Australia and has worked in road transport for more than 19 years. Coralie has been on the Transport Women Australia board since 2016, was made secretary in 2017 and was a finalist for the 2018 ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Trucking Industry Woman of the Year award.
Coralie was a participant in the 2018 Daimler Truck and Bus Future Leaders’ Forum, where she developed a project to expand the media strategies of stakeholders to raise awareness of safety and the image of the industry.
Roslyn Anderson, Wales Truck Repairs
Rosyln Anderson is Chief Financial Controller at Wales Truck Repairs. Roslyn grew up around trucks and has a longstanding passion for the industry.
In her time with Wales Truck Repairs Roslyn has been responsible for multiple divisions and keeps a pulse on the latest issues by attending a range of industry events. Demonstrating a proven commitment to her business and relevant industry matters, Roslyn recently spent three weeks in the US researching truck and heavy vehicle smash repairs.
In 2018, Rosyln became a Transport Women Australia board member and was named winner of the Road Freight NSW Woman of the Year Award.
Janet Cooper, Livestock and Rural Transport Association of WA
Jan Cooper has been Executive Officer of the Livestock and Rural Transport Association of WA since 2005.
In her role with LRTAWA, Jan has heavily invested her time, extensive knowledge and skills into representing Western Australian road transport operators. Described as a ‘quiet achiever’, Jan’s commitment to the road transport industry is reflected in her voluntary work, including in her role as a Transafe WA Director and her participation in the Remote Area Consultative Group.

Australian Furniture Removers Association (AFRA)
AFRA was founded in 1993 as the official body of removals experts that helps regulate the removals industry. More than 350 companies across the country are AFRA members and all are educated by qualified trainers to the AFRA professional minimal standards.
In updating the current training offered, AFRA have developed a new initiative moving towards their own Learning Management System. This includes training courses on insurance, chain of responsibility, workplace health and safety, and industrial relations. The association has also moved towards online training and traineeships to create career paths, retain staff and make training more accessible to all members.
Wodonga Institute of TAFE
Wodonga Institute of TAFE began running the Women Driving Transport Career program began in July 2018, supported by a consortium comprising of Australia Post, Volvo, Linfox and Transport Women Australia.
The program aims to remove potential barriers that deter women from entering the transport industry and increase diversity in the workforce.
During the program, each student completes units of competency and industry-specific skill sets including work health and safety, fatigue management, load restraint and chain of responsibility procedures.
Vellex
Vellex is an Australian owned and operated business focussed on providing freight distribution and logistics solutions across Australia. Vellex is an organisation with traditional family values and has a team of more than 400 staff across Australia and around 200 fleet subcontractors.
Committed to safety and compliance, Vellex has a dedicated WHS and Learning and Development team that collaborate with staff to improve safety across operational sites, with proactive training on safe procedures and policy enforcement. The Learning and Development team have been responsible for developing a new Operations Induction with a driver mentoring program.
