The Devonport City Council has today released its 2022/23 Annual Report.
Devonport Mayor Alison Jarman said the last financial year had been another successful period for Devonport, with sound financial outcomes, along with continued economic and non-economic dividends from Council’s LIVING CITY project.
In her first Annual Report since becoming Council’s Mayor following local government elections in 2022, Cr Jarman nominated the opening of the Waterfront Precinct earlier this year as a highlight.
“The opening of the Waterfront Precinct is a landmark event in the life of the LIVING CITY project. It epitomises the vision of the project, with its rewards of economic growth and activity, along with a sense of pride it has instilled in the community. The Waterfront Precinct showcases the natural beauty of the City and opens the CBD area up to the river, providing a wonderful meeting place for locals and tourists”.
Cr Jarman also acknowledged Council’s sound financial management and highlighted key capital works undertaken during the 2022/23 financial year, in particular noting road renewals undertaken on Tarleton Street in East Devonport and William Street, Devonport.
Devonport City Council General Manager Matthew Atkins said Council reported a strong fiscal performance, with a total comprehensive result of $9.17 million, and a net operating result from ordinary activities of a $4.67 million surplus, which was up $1.42 million on the budgeted amount of $3.1 million.
Mr Atkins said that income for the year exceeded budget by $1.9 million, largely due to additional fees and charges and an early payment of the Federal Government’s Financial Assistance Grant, and highlighted expenditure for the year was contained broadly in line with budget.
A total of $14 million of capital expenditure was delivered in the financial year, which included major road renewals and the ongoing construction of the Don to Leith section of the Coastal Pathway.
“The 2022/23 Annual Report details Council’s sound performance, both financially and from a service delivery perspective. Its solid financial outcomes positions Council well for the future. Additionally, through the development of a Term Plan by the current Council, actions and targeted initiatives have been identified which focus resources on the key objectives as identified by the current elected members”.
Mr Atkins further noted Council’s efficiency focus, through automation, enhanced systems and processes, yielding time and financial savings for Council, which in turn can be re-invested into value adding activities for the community.
“This efficiency focus aligns with Council’s core value of Pioneer Positive Improvement, with Council’s customers, and the community more broadly, realising the benefits both financially and through improved processes and customer satisfaction outcomes”, Mr Atkins said.
