2023 Commonwealth Bank John Monash Scholar focused on policy innovation in Australian healthcare

The 2023 Commonwealth Bank John Monash Scholarship award announced today will enable a young Australian working in the healthcare sector to undertake a Master in Public Policy at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy.

Each year The General Sir John Monash Foundation awards postgraduate scholarships to Australians who demonstrate outstanding leadership potential and who wish to study overseas. Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has sponsored the program via an individual scholarship since 2004.

For 2023, Hugo Rourke has been selected to receive the 2023 Commonwealth Bank John Monash Scholarship from a field of 244 applicants, and is one of 15 scholarships awarded by The General Sir John Monash Foundation.

Mr Rourke has worked in the digital health sector for a number of years, with a focus on applying behavioural science to improve health outcomes. He has founded a start-up business and previously worked as a consultant at McKinsey, after completing a joint Bachelor of Advanced Engineering and Commerce at the University of Sydney.

CBA Group Executive Institutional Banking & Markets, Andrew Hinchliff, said The General Sir John Monash Foundation scholarship program helped Australians build skills and talents that can benefit the country.

“We are delighted to continue our support of The General Sir John Monash Foundation scholarship program, which helps foster the capabilities of people with the potential to make significant contributions in their field through study in leading tertiary institutions around the world.

“Hugo is a worthy recipient of the 2023 Commonwealth Bank John Monash Scholarship and his focus on enabling Australians to have access to world-leading healthcare aligns with the bank’s own desire to build a better Australia,” Mr Hinchliff said.

“I am excited to be levelling up my capabilities with the generous support of CBA to bring more behavioural science into health policy. I’ve long been an admirer of the bank’s behavioural science team supporting better financial choices by Australians, and with this scholarship I hope to build my skills to impact on the health and lives of Australians,” comments Mr Rourke.
