Police have peacefully resolved an incident at a juvenile justice centre at Kariong.
About 8.30pm yesterday (Sunday 21 July 2019), officers from Brisbane Water Police District were called to the facility following reports a number of detainees assaulted other juveniles.
The group also accessed various tools from a maintenance shed and damaged building fixtures and furniture, before climbing onto the roof of a building.
An 18-year-old suffered stab wounds and facial injuries during the incident; he was transported by NSW Ambulance paramedics to Gosford Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
A further six men were injured during the incident.
A highly successful negotiation operation saw nine detainees surrender peacefully during the course of the day.
Just before 5.30pm, operatives from the Tactical Operations Unit and the Public Order and Riot Squad gained access to the roof of the facility, where the remaining detainees surrendered peacefully.
In total, 20 males – aged between 16 and 20 – have been arrested and remain in custody.
Local detectives have established Strike Force Mittabah to investigate the assaults, while Youth Justice NSW will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disturbance.
