I had the great pleasure of attending the final DFNC home game on Saturday at Deledio Rec Reserve. Dunolly Seniors have had a stellar year with an amazing comeback after only winning 2 games out of 58 between 2017 and the first round of 2022!

I grew up in an academic family and sport was not part of my up bringing except maybe the odd soccer game, if the Netherlands made it to a final. It wasn’t until I met my husband Andrew at Dookie Agricultural College when I was 18, that I was first introduced into AFL football.

Over the years I’ve attended footy games either watching my husband or my two boys, or the odd AFL game. I don’t barrack for a particular team as having a Collingwood supporter for a husband is more than enough for one household in my humble opinion… so it’s probably fair to say I’m not a super passionate football enthusiast.

What I am though, is in deep appreciation of what local football clubs such as DFNC bring to a community. The pride, engagement and passion of the community watching the last game on Saturday was a pleasure to witness. Standing ’round the fire with locals chatting and watching Dunolly Seniors win their last game and securing a spot in the finals for the first time in 11 years is something I will treasure for a long time.

La Trobe University did a study on the value of a Community Football Club:

In the four-page document it talks about ‘Social return on Investment’ and states that for every $1 spent to run a club, there is at least $4.40 return in social value in terms of increased social connectedness, wellbeing, and mental health status; employment outcomes; personal development; physical health; civic pride and support of other community groups.

Footy brings people together and promotes good behaviours for a better community. It nurtures sportsmanship, which is about teamwork, discipline and supporting each other. It fosters volunteers and I was in awe watching all the individuals on Saturday playing their role and going about the jobs that needed to be done to make the day such a successful event. Everyone played their part and was a cog that made everything run smoothly. You are all legends, are a credit to the community and should be very proud of yourselves.

Bring on the finals!
