I had the privilege of attending the Annual General Meeting 2021 of the Girl Guides Australia, Victoria, held in Maryborough on Saturday, representing the Central Goldfields Shire.
At the Annual General Meeting various awards were presented to women and girls of all ages for contribution and participation. I was struck by the number of people contributing hundreds of hours as volunteers to the organisation.
The CEO of the Girl Guides stated that the purpose of Girl Guides is to provide a “brave space for girls to fearlessly develop”. The development of any young person or adult can manifest itself in many ways and on many different levels. The word “leadership” was mentioned a number of times which made me think.
What makes a leader? What is a leader? What does it take to become a leader?
Taking the lead can start from an early age, taking charge of your siblings while mum is shopping, being the class leader in prep or grade 1. Nominating to be the school captain during your senior years of school. There are many different forms of leadership. From dictatorial to one voice, one vote, democratic.
What does it take to become a leader? It requires courage, being prepared to put your hand up, saying ” I will do it”. Identifying a need or problem and wanting to correct it. Being passionate.
To all our young people and developing leaders out there, please put your hand up and become involved. Join organisations such as Girl Guides Australia and Scouts Victoria. These organisations offer wonderful opportunities to develop as a person as well as your leadership skills. Sign up for opportunities at your school. Start volunteering at your local football or netball club. Never underestimate yourself!
We need strong leaders. You are the future!!
