Townsville City Council is investing more than $3 million into a range of infrastructure projects on Magnetic Island.
Infrastructure Committee Chair Cr Mark Molachino said water improvements are a major part of the works.
“Council is investing almost $1 million dollars in the Horseshoe Bay Water Recycling Facility,” Cr Molachino said.
“The plant has been in use since 2006, so we will be replacing or upgrading equipment.
“We are also renewing the Nelly Bay Reservoir to improve the water supply on the Island.
“Council workers have replaced the inlet and outlet pipes and the roof in the project, which has cost more than $750,000.
“We’ll spend almost $200,000 improving the Magnetic Island Water Recycling Facility.
“Water-related works are a key focus for Council and these projects will improve our infrastructure on Magnetic Island.”
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said Council’s works will encourage locals and visitors to become more active.
“Footpaths and walkways are an important part of building a fitter community and one of the major projects is the X Base Walkway,” Cr Greaney said.
“We are replacing rotten floorboards and joists – and these works will minimise ongoing maintenance costs.”
Cr Greaney said Council is also drawing up designs for a new guardrail and warning signs at Horseshoe Bay.
“These upgrades will improve safety for road users travelling around Horseshoe Bay,” Cr Greaney said.
“We have a wide range of projects planned on the Island and it is great to see all three levels of government working together to provide the community with top-class infrastructure.”
