Up to 70 tenants will begin to move into new social housing units this month following the completion of 30 new two-bedroom units in The Narrows, Darwin.
The Territory Labor Government is investing $21 million into more social and affordable housing to improve liveability, boost our economy and drive investment right across the Northern Territory.
Having a home provides better outcomes for the community, creating generational change, safety and security for Territorians.
The Territory Government is now in the process of identifying people on the public housing waitlist best suited to move into the units, known as the Rubix Apartments.
The units are owned by Tomazos Group, with the Territory Government holding head leases for the units and subsequently sub-leasing them to eligible public housing tenants.
The apartments have been designed for multi-purpose and flexible future use, providing for long-term suitability over the lifetime of the building.
The signing of this lease for 30 new apartments complements other housing projects which are occurring across the Territory, including:
an EOI for the long-term asset and tenancy management of the John Stokes Square Residential Precinct;a market sounding exercise to gauge the sector’s appetite and capacity for the redevelopment of the large Shiers Street complex, the Narrows;$4 million allocated for 16 news homes in Katherine;partnering with Venture Housing to supply 41 affordable homes across the Territory and establish a rental subsidy scheme for key workers;awarding the management of 57 affordable housing homes to Community Housing Central Australia;transferring 12 dwellings at Runge Street Coconut Grove to Team Health, a registered CHP;delivering Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) through the release of land grants for 11 parcels of land across the Territory.
