Council has endorsed $4.6M in funding for suburban beautification and infrastructure upgrade projects across the municipality.
Elected Members approved funding for 38 projects across the four Wards at the Ordinary Council meeting held on Tuesday 29 September.
The beautification projects aim to create sustainable streetscapes to increase amenity, cooling and biodiversity, and incorporate water sensitive design principals. The infrastructure upgrade projects will provide shade, accessibility, lighting and seating.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said he was delighted that each Ward would receive equal funding for key projects.
“City of Darwin has spent the past 12 months focussing on greening and beautifying our city and this funding will see Council delivering projects that will really improve the amenity of our suburbs, where so many Darwin residents live.”
“Significant beautification is planned for Moil, Parap, Karama and Malak Shopping Centres, along with major roads including Dripstone, Rothdale, Totem and Bradshaw Terrace.”
“Infrastructure upgrades will take place at the basketball court at Malak, lighting of Nakara Oval, landscaping at Nightcliff Shopping Centre and pedestrian access in Karama.”
“Improving our city is a key focus for this Council; I want our community to be proud of the city they live in.”
The 38 projects are all are expected to commence and be completed in the current financial year:
