$5 million for First Nations suicide postvention support services

Minister for Indigenous Australians

The Albanese Labor Government is providing $5 million to Thirrili Ltd to ensure the continued delivery of support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families impacted by suicide.

The funding extension to Thirrili, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Organisation, ensures culturally safe and trauma-informed postvention services are available for families affected by the loss of a loved one by suicide.

The funding will support continuation of a 24-hour help line, postvention supports, an Emergency Relief Fund for closest next of kin, community capacity building to support healing and partnership development.

Closing the Gap on the high rates of suicide for First Nations people, by investing in suicide prevention and postvention services, and supporting improved social and emotional wellbeing, is a priority for the Albanese Government.

Suicide remains the fifth leading cause of death among First Nations people, and suicide rates are more than double the national average.

Thirrili delivers the Indigenous Suicide Postvention Service, a national service available to all First Nations people, families and communities.

The Albanese Government is committed to reforming the suicide prevention system so every Australian has access to support when and where they need it and is calling for feedback on the draft ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Suicide Prevention Strategy.

In parallel with this consultation, the Albanese Government is supporting Gayaa Dhuwi to develop a First Nations suicide prevention strategy.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Indigenous Australians, Malarndirri McCarthy:

“This week we marked World Suicide Prevention Day, and the sad reality is far too many First Nations people are dying by suicide.

“First Nations people are twice as likely to die by suicide than non-Indigenous Australians, and the devastating impact on their loved ones and communities is enormous and ongoing.

“This funding for Thirrili ensures support is available from an organisation that is experienced in delivering vital services to First Nations communities in a culturally appropriate way.

“Continuing to invest in suicide prevention and postvention services which support First Nations communities demonstrates our government’s commitment to reducing the disproportionate impact of suicide and traumatic loss on First Nations families.”
