The Tasmanian Government recognises the role that libraries play within our communities, and the opportunities that they provide for lifelong learning, social interactions, and cultural inspiration.
Today, we congratulate a wonderful moment in time, with Tasmania’s very own Launceston Library celebrating 50 years.
Generations of northern Tasmanians have benefited from the enormous contribution that this iconic institution has made to the local community.
As part of the celebration, the library will host an exhibition that showcases many fascinating photographs, newspaper articles from The Examiner, old membership cards, architectural drawings of the 1970s library and fascinating objects used to provide services to the community over the past 50 years.
Additionally, the Launceston Library community will today celebrate with a big morning tea for those who have been connected with Launceston Library throughout its 50 years and will include a plaque unveiling, exhibitions, music and cake.
Libraries Tasmania holds a wealth of cultural stories and history in its care and for over half a century, they have provided library services to the Tasmanian community that are accessible, inclusive and open to all – regardless of age, interests or needs.
