60,000 Reasons to Commit to ACT Rezoning Reforms

Property Council ACT Interim Executive Director Gino Luglietti said research commissioned from Purdon outlines a strategy that could help to meet the ACT’s growing housing demand.

“Our population is set to nearly double by 2060, but much of Canberra’s residential zoning remains stuck in the 1960s,” Mr Luglietti said.

“The research identifies a clear pathway to deliver the homes Canberra desperately needs, while respecting our city’s unique character and making better use of existing infrastructure.

“The data makes it clear there are 60,000 reasons for the next ACT Government to consider thoughtful rezoning as a way to meet tough housing targets,” he said.

Mr Luglietti said the report recommends adjustments to allow for more dual occupancies and modify building size limits to increase housing supply within existing suburbs.

“Canberra’s population is set to grow by over 330,000 people by 2060, requiring around 165,000 new homes, and the current pace of development is woefully inadequate,” Mr Luglietti said.

“These proposed reforms offer a solution that meets housing demand while also preserving our green spaces and providing a significant boost to the economy.

The report forecasts the reforms could generate $26.5 billion in construction activity by 2060, with substantial benefits for both the private sector and government revenues,” he said.

“The new ACT Government, industry, and community must unite to ensure these reforms are realised.

“The increased housing choice and ‘missing middle’ options could offer more opportunity for people to be able to stay within their communities, close to friends and family at all stages of life,” Mr Luglietti said.
