Seventy-two neighbourhood and community centres across Queensland will share in more than $800,000 thanks to the second round of the Palaszczuk Government’s Thriving Queensland Community grants.
Minister for Communities Coralee O’Rourke today (21 June) announced the successful recipients of the grants, highlighting how the funding would benefit the neighbourhood and community centres.
“These grants of up to $20,000 each will help neighbourhood and community centres run events, deliver projects and purchase the equipment they need to help Queensland communities thrive,” Mrs O’Rourke said.
“Many of the neighbourhood centres receiving a Thriving Queensland Communities grant are located in regional parts of the state including Mackay, Mount Isa, Hervey Bay and Bundaberg.
“For example, the Bundaberg & District Neighbourhood Centre will use its grant of $10,487 to install a new phone system and photocopying machine.
“At the George Street Neighbourhood Centre in Mackay, a grant of $18,250 will be used for a digital story-telling project, as well as professional development for neighbourhood centre staff and the purchase of new computers.”
The Thriving Queensland Communities grant funding is in addition to $16.15 million funding provided by the Palaszczuk Government to 124 neighbourhood and community centres across the state, as well as $1.5 million in Community Connect funding for 12 centres.
Mrs O’Rourke said the Thriving Queensland Communities grants were another example of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to creating stronger and more resilient communities.
“We want to create thriving communities, where Queenslanders, regardless of their personal circumstances, are able to participate and be included in their community, be resilient and enjoy social and economic wellbeing,” she said.
“The Palaszczuk Government recognises the important role the state’s network of neighbourhood and community centres play in helping their communities thrive.
“We are committed to contributing to the support of these vital centres, which provide supports and services to vulnerable Queenslanders.”
