A pop up drive-in cinema experience in store for Wagga

It is being described as a chance to return to the 1970s and ’80s, when the British rock band Queen was at its peak and the drive-in was the place to go to catch a ‘flick’.

Wagga Wagga City Council is hosting a night of movie entertainment under the stars on Friday 2 October 2020 on a 14m x 7m blow-up screen – or airscreen – at the Cross Street carpark next to the Visitor Information Centre.

Visitor Economy & Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton said the feature will be Bohemian Rhapsody, the true-story adaptation of mega-group Queen.

“We understand that there haven’t been many events for the community due to COVID restrictions, so we’ve been looking at different ways to put something on for the community that’s still COVID safe,” Ms Hamilton.

“We had been working on the idea of hosting a drive-in cinema for community entertainment for some time.

“The evening is about kick-starting the long-weekend with something that’s a bit different and gives people the chance to get out of the house with friends or as a date night and enjoy a night of nostalgia.”

Tickets are selling now and are limited to 150 vehicles, based on a size-per-car model – smaller cars at the front, larger cars at the back to ensure everyone has the best viewing experience.

Traffic marshals will be at the entrance to direct each car to its allocated spot, and at each location to ensure cars are in the right position.

Ms Hamilton said as part of the COVID safe measures, minimal movement will be allowed outside of the car during the event.

“When you arrive, you’ll be directed to tune in a unique FM radio frequency so you can listen from your very own car or device,” Ms Hamilton said.

“We will have marshals who will monitor movement on the night to ensure people remain in their cars and don’t gather or mingle.

“Due to limited movement outside your car there will be no food options available on site, so we’re encouraging everyone to bring their own snacks or to drop by one of their favourite local eateries and grab something to go before heading to the screening.

“To adhere to COVID regulations, no tickets will be sold at the gate, so get in quickly to avoid disappointment.”

Gates open at 6pm, with the screening to start at 7pm.
