A statement from Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry
The Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry supports Melbourne Airport’s pitch to become Virgin Australia’s new home base, following the airline’s announcement that it will go into voluntary administration.
Virgin Australia’s shift to Melbourne would ensure Australia retains two profitable and competitive airlines, supporting choice for travellers.
Melbourne is a major centre for business, domestic and international tourism, events and the arts, with transport connections to regional centres and other states.
With the city forecast to be Australia’s largest by 2030 or earlier, this proposal would cater to the inevitable demand that comes with such rapid growth and in turn give the airline its best opportunity for longevity and success.
As Qantas calls Sydney home, it would be strategic for Virgin to establish a base in Melbourne where it already has a strong foundation, with the city having six of the top ten Australian routes.
COVID-19 has been devastating for many sectors. Returning stronger requires long-term, sustainable investments that will rebuild our economy and keep people in jobs.
Basing Virgin’s aircraft at Melbourne Airport is one of these investments, and we will continue to advocate for its support.
