AAD calls for public comment on draft Initial Environmental Evaluation: Operation of RSV Nuyina and science systems 27 August 2024

Australian Antarctic Division

The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) has prepared an Initial Environmental Evaluation (IEE) to assess the potential environmental impacts associated with the operation of the Australian icebreaker RSV Nuyina and onboard science systems from 2024 – 2029. The vessel supports the resupply of Australia’s three Antarctic research stations and the sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island station. RSV Nuyina is the AAD’s platform for supporting marine and atmospheric science in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.

Activities include:

  • Operation of RSV Nuyina in the Antarctic Treaty Area (south of 60°S).
  • Resupply activities at Australian Antarctic stations, including the delivery of cargo and fuel.
  • Return of cargo and waste from Antarctica to Australia.
  • Science activities undertaken during resupply voyages each season.

The AAD invites members of the public to submit comments on the draft IEE document. Comments should focus on potential environmental impacts of the proposed activities and/or suggest additional, specific ways to reduce the proposal’s environmental impacts.
