The ABC is calling on all high school students in the City of Melton and across greater Melbourne to share a story about their life for the chance to have it told at a national level.
Melton City Council is among 32 councils in Melbourne to partner with the ABC on Takeover Melbourne – a new competition that seeks to showcase the voices of young Melburnians and help them shape the future of their city.
High school students, and those outside of formal education aged 12 – 18, are encouraged to share a short story about part of their life, written or recorded.
Judges will then select 32 winners to have their stories featured locally and nationally on the ABC.
City of Melton Mayor Cr Lara Carli urged local teenagers to share a story about an interesting part of their life or an issue that affects them.
“Whether you share a challenge you’ve faced, an issue you’re passionate about, or a hobby you love, your story has the power to make a difference and give young people a voice,” Cr Carli said.
“Your experiences, the things that move you, inspire you, or even upset you, are all important stories that uncover things that matter to young people.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for local young people to have their perspective represented in the media and to help shape our City’s future.”
Director of ABC Regional and Local, Judith Whelan said the Takeover Melbourne Competition would empower young people to speak up about important issues.
“The ABC is opening its doors to the younger generation, to make sure their voices are heard and taken seriously on issues that affect them. Takeover is an exciting opportunity for the ABC to engage with communities across the city,” she said.
“We are looking forward to seeing Takeover Melbourne provide real opportunities to the young people of Melbourne.”
Entries to Takeover Melbourne are open until Friday 26 June, with entrants advised to submit either 300-400 words or 2-4 minutes of audio/video.
