ABC elected to Administrative Council of Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union

The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) has elected the Australian Broadcasting Corporation to its Administrative Council, the Union’s peak decision-making body.

The ABU is the world’s biggest broadcasting union with members reaching three billion people across Asia and the Pacific.

The ABC will serve a three-year term on the Council following an election at the annual general assembly of the ABU in New Delhi.

Head of ABC International Services Claire M. Gorman said, “We welcome this acknowledgement of the ABC’s leadership in public service media and the opportunity to work together in this multilateral forum with like-minded broadcasters.”.

“Digital transformation and the rapid advancement of information technology has resulted in new challenges for citizen access to unbiased news and information.”

“Public service broadcasters remain among the most trusted sources in an age of mis and dis-information, and censorship in parts of the internet.”.

Ms Gorman said the ABC will draw on expertise in linear and digital transmission across all genres, and in media development through ABC International Development, to work on issues of common concern and support media in developing countries.

The ABC has a long association with the ABU as a founding member in 1964 with Japan’s national broadcaster NHK. Membership of the ABU is diverse and includes public service broadcasters and private and state media in developed and developing regional markets.
