With a record number of police officers in Tasmania, the Rockliff Liberal Government is pleased to welcome a further five members who were sworn in this week as part of the Accelerated Training Course program.
The five men have previous policing experiences in Queensland, Victoria and the Northern Territory.
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis, said the officers will complete an intensive 12-week training course to transfer their skills to the Tasmanian setting, which includes instruction on firearms and operational safety tactics. On completion the officers will be stationed at New Norfolk (2), Launceston, Devonport and Burnie Stations.
“The Accelerated Training Program was developed in 2018 to formalise entry into Tasmania Police for applicants who are current or ex-police officers from other Australian policing jurisdictions or from New Zealand Police,” Minister Ellis said.
“Through this program, 81 skilled police officers have moved their families, lives and careers to Tasmania, and we warmly welcome them into our communities.”
“These five new recruits will join the record graduation of 74 officers earlier this month from the Tasmania Police Academy.
“More investment means more police so we can continue to deliver on our back to basics policing strategy.”
Minister Ellis said the Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to tackling crime and investing in police is one of the reasons Tasmania is one of the safest places to live and raise a family.
The Tasmanian Government has invested more than $730 million into Tasmania Police since 2014 and is committed to increasing police numbers by 334 to 1,454 by July 2026.
