Council advises that access to the Nimmitabel Mill is limited until further notice. This change is due to the recent observation of visible structural defects that may affect the physical integrity of the stonework building. These defects mean the structure is unsafe for the public.
Council will continue to monitor the situation and we will seek funding to enable structural restoration and ongoing preservation of this culturally significant Crown Land site – known locally as Geldmacher Mill.
This Crown Land Reserve (R75476) is positioned on the corner of Boyd & Clarke Streets, with Council being the designated Crown Land Manager under the CLM Act. The Old Mill Reserve is listed as a Local Heritage Item within the Cooma-Monaro Local Environmental Plan 2013 (Listing Number I203).
The reserve represents a historic and cultural record of early construction and manufacturing in the local area. The Reserve’s most prominent feature, the stone mill structure, was constructed by John Geldmacher between 1865 and 1872.
Nimmitabel Advancement Group (NAG) have for many years offered valued general care and access co-ordination at the site, delivering practical benefits for the community, Council and the Crown Land Reserve site itself.
