Acknowledging those who do good for their community – Wollongong

Do you know someone who has made a special contribution to the City of Wollongong?

The Lord Mayor’s Recognition Reception is held annually and recognises the everyday people, community groups and local sporting clubs whose small efforts help make Wollongong a great place to live, work and play. Right now, Council is calling for people to those who deserve to be recognised as an upstanding member of the Wollongong community.

Nominations for the Lord Mayor’s Recognition Reception are open until Tuesday 18 June 2024. The reception will then be held in August 2024.

For Councillor Gordon Bradbery, the upcoming reception will be a special one, as his last as Lord Mayor of the City of Wollongong.

“As I approach the finish line of my time as the Lord Mayor of Wollongong, it gives me great pleasure to host one last Lord Mayor’s Recognition Reception,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM.

“I enjoy these annual ceremonies as they’re a chance to celebrate those in our community who go above and beyond in a small, but important way. The reception especially focusses on awarding those whose achievements and efforts have not been previously acknowledged. That includes individuals, community groups, performance troupes and local sporting clubs.”

Cr Bradbery said as he reflects upon his time as Lord Mayor, there have been many times where our community has faced challenges and rallied together to support one another.

“I’ve seen and experienced many challenging moments since 2011 and we’re working through one of those now with the April 2024 floods. These are a most timely example of some of the real challenges we will continue to face as a community that grapples with climate change.

“It is our community’s unwavering spirit that gives me confidence in our ability to face whatever challenges come our way. We saw in April, as many residents’ properties were damaged by flood water and rain, how so many people came together to support one another. This sense of community comradeship in times of need is the norm for our city.

“On behalf of Council and the community, we wish to acknowledge the people whose efforts, in any regard, deserve recognition. I encourage everyone to think about those in your life whose efforts have made a positive difference to their community and nominate them for an award.”
