Seven reserves have reopened to the public following the end of the culling component of the Eastern Grey Kangaroo Management Program.
The ACT’s Conservator of Flora and Fauna, Bren Burkevics thanked the ACT community for their patience and cooperation during the closure period.
“Managing kangaroos is an important part of a diverse land management program that helps protect, conserve and enhance the ACT’s parks and reserves across the ACT,” Mr Burkevics said.
The following reserves have now reopened to the public without restrictions:
- Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve
- Gungaderra Grasslands
- Mt Ainslie Nature Reserve
- Mt Majura Nature Reserve
- Mulanggari Grasslands
- Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve
- Red Hill Nature Reserve
“A total of 1,232 kangaroos have been removed across the seven reserves in accordance with Conservation Advice which is published online. Fertility control activities through the ongoing use of GonaCon Immunocontraceptive Vaccine will continue as part of the Kangaroo Management Program”.
“Work to protect and enhance the ACT’s parks and reserves will continue at pace through controlling weeds, removing invasive animals and restoring areas of high conservation value,” Mr Burkevics concluded.
