Action packed expo aims to educate and empower community

From a mock kitchen blaze to a road crash simulation, don’t miss the unique opportunity to see local emergency services in action at the free Emergency Services Community Expo.

A joint initiative of Sunshine Coast Council, Queensland Police Service, Queensland Ambulance Service and Queensland Fire and Emergency Service, the expo will be held at the Sunshine Coast Stadium from 11am to 3pm on Sunday May 19, 2019.

Sunshine Coast Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group Chair Mark Jamieson said the family oriented event offered something for everyone.

“As well as the fire and crash demonstrations, a helicopter will be dropping water bombs, emergency service vehicles will be open for inspection and CPR awareness training will be on offer.

“There’s even going to be musical entertainment thanks to the talented Queensland Police Service Pipes and Drums group.

“Be sure to grab an expo passport on arrival and collect stamps by answering questions connected to the various information stalls, in order to be in the running to win some great prizes including a family evacuation kit and vouchers.”

Mayor Jamieson encouraged the community to come along and learn more about the essential work emergency services, council workers and volunteers undertake.

“Importantly, the expo also delivers education around preparing for an emergency or disaster, with experienced staff available to share tips and advice,” he said.

“Severe weather events and other emergencies are part of life – it’s not if they will happen, but when they will happen – so early education and knowing what to do is crucial.”

During the expo, the community will have the chance to vote for their favourite finalist in the Sunshine Coast Get Ready schools video competition.

The winning school will work with a professional marketing company to develop a local Get Ready disaster preparedness television, radio and social media campaign.

Attendees can also watch the inter-service soccer round-robin throughout the day with the finals being played at 3pm.
