Additional frontline officers to bolster Far Northern Region

An additional 64 growth positions have been allocated to Far North District’s frontline this financial year, to support current demand.

Cairns Police Station will receive eight new positions, including six general duties constables and two sergeant positions.

Edmonton will be allocated five general duties constables and Gordonvale will see a growth of nine constables, a sergeant and senior sergeant position.

Gordonvale Police Station will become a 24-hour facility to meet the growth in southern Cairns.

Additional general duties officers will be tasked to police stations including Mossman, Bamaga, Lockhart River, Weipa, Coen, Hopevale and Yarrabah.

16 positions will be allocated to specialist units including Cairns Highway Patrol, Cairns Dog Squad, Cairns Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), Tablelands CIB, Innisfail CIB, Cairns Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU), Tablelands CPIU, Innisfail CPIU and the Scientific Unit.

The approved positions will be filled in the coming months and follow a growth of 40 positions last year.

Far Northern Region Assistant Commissioner Brett Schafferius said the additional positions are a welcome boost to the frontline.

“The Queensland Police Service is committed to ensuring our officers are allocated across the region to meet the demand of our communities,” Assistant Commissioner Schafferius said.

“The decentralised geography of our region presents policing challenges, but also provides the opportunity to move resources around as demand changes.

“The 64 additional growth positions will enhance community relations and provide enhanced service delivery across the Far North region.”
