Up to 10,000 people a day are expected to descend on the Eastern Beach area this Christmas and New Year period.
The City of Greater Geelong is responding to the influx of visitors by increasing resources to ensure this special place in our region is enjoyable, safe and well maintained.
We are providing 11 portable toilets in addition to the existing public toilets available and increasing the number of bins.
There will be more dedicated cleaners on deck who will clean the toilets and park areas more frequently, while extra contracted waste collections are planned for each day.
To ensure the safety of beachgoers, the lifeguard roster and coverage is being expanded and traffic crews will manage the Ritchie Boulevard car park on forecasted peak days, to avoid long queues of vehicles.
There will be live monitoring of the area’s CCTV and Community Safety and Regulation (formerly known as Health & Local Laws) will increase its patrols to monitor potential issues such as open fires, coal fired BBQs, illegal parking and camping. Electronic signs will also warn against these issues. Victoria Police will be in attendance with a focus on traffic and anti-social behaviour.
Dog owners are reminded that their pets must remain on a leash.
The City is rolling out a campaign this summer to encourage community members to take their rubbish with them where possible.
Bins are less likely to fill up and have rubbish heaped on or around them, which leads to litter being blown into the surrounding land and water, or spread about by wildlife.
Eligible drink containers can also be taken to Container Deposit Scheme collection points in exchange for 10 cents each.
Items like nappies, cotton buds, sanitary items and wipes (even the ones labelled as flushable) belong in the bin, rather than the toilet. Products other than toilet paper do not break down in public toilets and cause blockages and overflows.

This picturesque location is a significant drawcard for visitors with its enclosed sea bath, boardwalk, children’s pool, terraced lawns and playground.
We want everyone to have a great time when they visit Eastern Beach over Christmas and New Year’s.
The City is ensuring that there will be sufficient resources and facilities to accommodate the thousands of extra people using this space in this period.
It will be all hands on deck for the City’s cleaning, lifeguard, waste and Community Safety and Regulation crews.
