Adelaide Film Festival Pop Up premiere movie screenings

The Adelaide Film Festival will host a special Pop Up event over the next three days for the Australian premiere of two movies supported by the State Government through the Adelaide Film Festival Fund.

Both films – Top End Wedding and Animals – had their world premiere at one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals – Sundance – in the United States earlier this year.

Minister for Innovation and Skills, David Pisoni, said both movies gained critical and audience acclaim and is confident they will be well-received by Australian audiences when released this year.

“Both movies have seen investment support by the Adelaide Film Festival Fund and the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC) and were among a record six Australian films screened at this year’s Sundance Film Festival,” he said.

Animals, which screens tonight, is based on the acclaimed novel by Emma Jane Unsworth, set in Dublin, where the friendship of two flatmates is strained when one falls in love and gets engaged.

Directed by award-winning South Australian filmmaker Sophie Hyde, Animals stars Holliday Grainger and Alia Shawkat.

Tomorrow night’s screening will feature Top End Wedding, with Adelaide couple Lauren, starring Miranda Tapsell (The Sapphires) and Ned, played by Gwilym Lee (Brian May in Bohemian Rhapsody), having 10 days before their wedding to find Lauren’s mother who has gone AWOL.

The Adelaide Film Festival pop-up screenings will see Tapsell, co-stars Gwilym Lee and Huw Higginson, director Wayne Blair and South Australian writer Joshua Tyler, walk the red carpet for this Australian premiere event.

Minister Pisoni said that both are outstanding movies that have made it to the screen through the creative efforts of South Australian talent and support from the Marshall Liberal Government through the SAFC and the Adelaide Film Festival Fund.

“The Adelaide Film Festival Fund is the first of its kind in Australia and remains one of the few in the world. It has provided funding to more than 100 projects to date, many of which have won major awards in some of the world’s leading film festivals,” he said.

“Most recently, the 2018 Adelaide Film Festival opened with another Fund-supported movie, Hotel Mumbai, with stars Armie Hammer, Dev Patel and Tilda-Cobham-Hervey walking the red carpet for its premiere screening. This movie is now screening in more than 1,000 cinemas in Australia and the US.

“Also, in a further show of success for the local film industry, the South Australian production of Storm Boy opens today in cinemas across the US.”

Screening details and ticket information for the Adelaide Film Festival Pop Up is available . Top End Wedding will be released nationally on 2 May while Animals will be released later this year.
