Council is calling on the Victorian Government to introduce stronger legislation to deter the sale of illegal nicotine vapes and e-cigarettes.
The potential health impacts of vaping are well known, with the liquid in these products containing over 200 chemicals, some of which cause cancer.
It is illegal for shops to sell e-cigarettes that contain nicotine without a doctor’s prescription.
Bayside Mayor, Cr Hanna El Mouallem has written to The Hon. Mary-Anne Thomas, Victoria’s Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services, to share his concerns on this issue.
Under the Tobacco Act 1987 Council has an obligation to ensure the operator is complying with the relevant requirements including the display of products, mandatory signage and not selling to minors.
Council will continue to monitor premises which sell vapes to ensure compliance with the Tobacco Act 1987.
