The AFP has arrested a Melbourne man, 27, this morning (Friday, 21 October, 2022), after a series of alleged online threats were made to a member of the Australian Senate.
AFP officers arrested the man at his Brunswick West home while executing a search warrant, with electronic devices including a laptop and desktop computer seized.
Investigators allege the Brunswick West man is responsible for making the serious online threats, including threats to kill, towards the member of the Australian Senate via a social media platform in September and October 2022.
The man is expected to face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today (Friday, 21 October, 2022) charged with the following offences:
- Two counts of use a carriage service to make a threat to kill, contrary to section 474.15(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth); and
- Use a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence, contrary to section 474.17 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).
The maximum penalty for these offences includes 10 years’ imprisonment.
AFP Acting Commander Anita van Hilst said the AFP was committed to protecting all members of the Australian public, including former and current politicians serving the community.
“This arrest should send a strong message that the AFP and its partners are working tirelessly to identify and prosecute anyone who breaks the law by harassing, menacing or threatening politicians, including those who work alongside them,” she said.
“The AFP supports the political expression and freedom of speech, however when it leads to criminal behaviour, including threats and harassment, even online, it will not be tolerated.”
