Airservices ‘digital twin’ technology wins ISG Paragon Award 2020

Airservices’ innovative technology has won the prestigious 2020 ISG Paragon Award (APAC) for its data-driven prediction technology which revolutionises air traffic management.

Working in partnership with Deloitte and McLaren Applied Technologies, the ‘Digital Twin of the Skies’ project was awarded in the ‘Imagination’ category for its innovative approach in enhancing real-time decision making for a safer and reliable service to customers.

“The award win is great recognition for Airservices and our commitment to digital-led innovation. We’re proud to be leading the way in embracing digital disruption and implementing new technology that will make our airspace more efficient, safe and sustainable. The benefits of enhanced decision-making are exponential for those who access our skies and we’re excited by its potential for the future,” said Mick Snell, Airservices Service Strategy Manager.

The pace of technological change and emergence of unmanned aerial vehicles and other environmental challenges such as Co2 emissions, weather pattern predictability and greater expectations of external stakeholders such as airlines and regulators, has accelerated the need for new intelligent systems.

We have created a digital replica of Australian airspace, including all of the aircraft and weather within the airspace. This cutting-edge digital twin can be used to more accurately predict, collaborate and respond to the changing requirements and requests, enabling highly precise predictions and effective data-driven decision-making.

The technology, which has gained global attention, won the vote of the independent panel of industry experts with extensive experience in sourcing and technology. Now in its ninth year, ISG Paragon Awards (APAC) are an initiative that identifies leading innovation and impactful sourcing partnerships.

“Airservices and its partners have been able to develop practical and targeted use cases to systematically design a new way of working in an industry that is anchored in a culture of engineered safety and efficiency,” said Don Easter, lead judge for the award category.

The winners of the ISG Paragon Awards (APAC) were announced in August 2020. The ‘Imagination’ category was awarded to joint winners Airservices Australia and Capgemini. The event is organised by technology research and advisory firm Information Services Group.
