The Australian Lawyers Alliance’s (ALA) first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) was launched today at the organisation’s annual national conference.
“The ALA advocates for law reform that protects and promotes justice, freedom and the rights of the individual,” said Mr Andrew Christopoulos, ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ President, ALA. “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have unique needs to be addressed as we work towards achieving equality and equity.
“It is appropriate that we should formalise our support of the principles of reconciliation.”
Despite a history of advocating for justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, this is the first RAP that the ALA has prepared.
“This Plan formalises our commitment to reconciliation and provides an important structure to improve our advocacy and drive our contribution to reconciliation over the next two years,” said Mr Christopoulos.
“Our vision for reconciliation ensures that we will work together with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to promote their rights and help ensure that their voice is heard.
“I am confident that the value of our policy and advocacy work will be enhanced by developing stronger relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples so that their priorities, perspectives and values are genuinely reflected in our work.”
