Health Minister Roger Cook has today announced that the lifesaving radiation oncology project in Albany is progressing well with the request for tenders for forward works now closed.
Mr Cook provided the update while in the Great Southern and said the next steps would see works formally awarded.
The forward works package is considered a vital step in establishing the service and will allow for the Linac Suite to be safely housed and protect patients, visitors and staff from potential radiation exposure.
Works include improvements to parking, vehicle access and vital site preparation.
The tender award is expected in November with construction on the project earmarked for as soon as December.
The current project program indicates that the lifesaving service will be up and running in the second half of 2022 with detailed design work around the main building works now finalised.
As stated by Health Minister Roger Cook:
“The McGowan Government has been working very closely with the WA Country Health Service (WACHS) to identify opportunities to accelerate or expedite the construction timeline on this lifesaving project.
“I’d like to commend WACHS for their progress to date and have been pleased to learn the forward works package has generated considerable interest and that formal award is anticipated as soon as next month.
“Shortly thereafter, we expect construction will commence with vital site preparation front of mind.
“The State Government acknowledges the importance of this project, however, taking the necessary time to ensure the machinery can be operated safely and without radiation exposure to patients, staff and visitors is imperative.
“We’re getting on with the next steps needed to deliver the lifesaving machinery to residents of the Great Southern with detailed design work now finalised.”
As stated by Albany MLA Peter Watson:
“The radiation oncology service will provide lifesaving treatment for the people of Albany and the Great Southern.
“To have this service close to the homes of patients will make it less stressful for them and their families, as they will get treatment without the added burden of travelling to Perth or Bunbury.
“Bringing health services closer to home is all about putting patients first.”
