The Mornington Peninsula Shire has celebrated the annual All Abilities Day where hundreds of people turned out for a fun day of sport and activity at Civic Reserve in Mornington.
People with disability enjoyed participating in sports such as tennis, dance, basketball, gymnastics, table tennis, cricket and more.
The Victoria Police Local Law Enforcement Torch Run was a highlight of the day, raising awareness and funds to assist Special Olympics Australia athletes.
The runners lit a cauldron to officially launch the event, which was also a celebration of International Day of People with Disability.
Councillor Mayor Sam Hearn said: “All Abilities Day is a brilliant community event that brings people together to celebrate diversity.
“It highlights the fact that there are sport and recreation options for everyone, and that people with disabilities love experiencing the joy of activity, the thrill of achievement and the friendship of being part of a team.”
Seawinds ward Councillor and delegate to the Disability Advisory Committee Antonella Celi said: “It was wonderful to welcome Victoria Police’s Local Law Enforcement Torch Run and their ‘Guardians of the Flame’ who supported the torch runners at the All Abilities Day.
“Hundreds of people have shown that disability doesn’t have to be a barrier to participation in sport and recreation.
“I’d like to extend a huge thank you to all involved for making this an inspirational and enjoyable day for all.”
