Indigo Shire Council is again throwing its support behind NAIDOC Week celebrations, with a vibrant all-ages community celebration to be held at the Wahgunyah School of Art on Saturday 13 July.

The Unite Indigo – Blak, loud and proud edition is a free and inclusive event and has been organised by young people from the Indigo Shire Council’s Future Proof Action Group in collaboration with Arts Rutherglen.

The event will feature performances by renowned First Nations artists Madi Colville-Walker and Kiwat Kennell and community members of all ages are welcome to join in the festivities and enjoy the unique cultural experience.

Indigo Shire Mayor Sophie Price says the inspiring and soulful performances promise to be a memorable highlight for attendees, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and talent of First Nations artists.

“We’re really proud to present this NAIDOC Week event, which underscores our commitment to celebrating the contributions and culture of First Nations people,” says Cr Price.

“Our Future Proof Action Group has done an incredible job in organising this event, and we are excited to bring the community together in celebration, learning and appreciation.”

This year’s NAIDOC theme, chosen by the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ NAIDOC Committee, is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud. The theme honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with fire symbolizing the connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Indigo Shire libraries will also participate in NAIDOC Week with special programming, including storytime sessions for families and a showcase of featured books, movies, and items from the First Nations collection.

Council will also raise the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags at its offices across the Shire in a symbolic gesture to recognise and honour First Nations People.
