Officers from Barrier Police District have charged a man after more than $900,000 in cash was allegedly located concealed in a Rental car in Broken Hill early this morning.
About 3.30am (Friday 10 May 2019), a rental vehicle was stopped on Rakow Street and police spoke with the 52-year-old driver.
The driver appeared nervous and raised the suspicion for police leading them to search his vehicle.
Officers allegedly located an ‘ice’ pipe in his luggage. A closer look at a new fuel storage tank in the vehicle raised further suspicion. The tank had a capacity of 400 litres but was only three quarters full.
The vehicle was seized, and the driver was taken to Broken Hill Police Station where inquiries continued.
The fuel tank was taken to a local machinery dealer who drained the fuel allegedly revealing a false bottom in the tank.
A steel box was located inside the tank allegedly containing $947,000 cash that was sealed in cryovac bags.
The driver was charged with deal in proceeds of crime and goods in custody.
He was refused bail and will appear in Broken Hill Bail Court tomorrow (Saturday 11 May 2019).
