The AMA has joined the Rethink Sugary Drink alliance – a partnership between 19 other health and community organisations who all share the united goal of reducing the consumption of sugary drinks in Australia.
AMA President Dr Omar Khorshid said the AMA welcomed being part of the Rethink alliance, saying there was strength in working together to reduce the harm done to Australians from excessive sugar in drinks.
“Australians drink more than 2.4 billion litres of sugary drinks each year. That’s a lot of sugar, and it’s making us sick. Sugary drinks contain huge amounts of free sugar with almost no nutritional benefit. They are fuelling Australia’s growing chronic disease crisis including preventable chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some cancers,” Dr Khorshid said.
“The AMA launched its earlier this year, which is creating awareness through social and mainstream media of the harm done by sugary drinks.
