The Board of Directors of the Minerals Council of Australia have elected Mr Andrew Michelmore AO as the new Chair of the MCA.
Mr Michelmore will begin as Chair on 1 January 2023 when the Hon Helen Coonan steps down at the end of 2022.
He previously served as Chair of the MCA from 2013 to 2016. He has more than 35 years’ experience in senior leadership roles in Australia and overseas in the metals and mining industry, including as CEO and Executive Director of MMG Limited, and CEO of Zinifex Limited and OZ Minerals Limited.
Mr Michelmore is also currently the Chair of the Jean Hailes Foundation for Women’s Health, the Council of Melbourne Grammar School and Century Aluminum (NASDAQ: CENX).
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I’d like to thank Ms Coonan for her leadership over the past three and a half years.
During this time, Australian mining has delivered record levels of export and government revenue, took significant steps on sustainable mining, committed to a reduction of emissions and an ambition of net zero by 2050, and confirmed the industry’s commitment to a culture and workplaces that are free from sexual harassment.
Ms Coonan also helped steer the MCA and the Australian minerals industry through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Australian mining continued to operate and contribute to the economy and Australia, delivering strong jobs growth across our regional communities, while keeping workers, families and communities safe.
The MCA Board also invited two new members to the Board. Ms Geraldine Slattery, President, Minerals Australia, BHP and Ms Mia Gous, Regional Vice President – Australia, Newmont.
Both will start in January 2023 and replace Mr Edgar Basto (BHP) and Mr Alex Bates (Newmont).
