The Andrews Government is proposing yet another new tax on Victorians to pay for its botched attempt to host the Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games.
It’s been revealed today that Labor is considering introducing a new housing tax. It would be the 50th new or increased tax since the Andrews Government was elected in 2014.
Victorians already pay the most tax per person – $5,074 – more than any other state in Australia, including the highest property taxes, and the May budget saw a raft of new taxes on jobs, rents and schools.
Opposition Leader John Pesutto said: “Premier Daniel Andrews and Deputy Premier Jacinta Allan are desperately to distract Victorians from the growing Commonwealth Games scandal.
“They will do anything to avoid scrutiny of their gross incompetence and deceit and are happy to impose more taxes on hard working Victorian workers, families and businesses already experiencing unprecedented cost of living pressures, to cover the cost of their mistakes.
“Many Victorian renters are struggling and they deserve well-thought out reforms from the Andrews Government, not policy on the run and certainty not more new taxes.
“Victorians deserve answers on the Commonwealth Games scandal and they deserve accountability. The minister responsible for delivering the Commonwealth Games Jacinta Allan must resign and if she won’t go then the Premier must sack her.”
